Professional internships, another way to learn

The Village

After a year of life, the Village is now ready to welcome interns. And it was Alexia Cassou, a nursing student in Dax, who inaugurated this new aspect of the establishment with a 5-week internship.

Véronique Gizard, health staff manager at the Village, manages the arrival of student caregivers, educational and social assistants (former medico-psychological assistants) and nurses who may come from Dax, Mont-de-Marsan, Bayonne, or even Ustaritz. This is an essential part of her job for the internship supervisor: "A medico-social establishment like ours is one of the training places for young students and it is a moral obligation to receive them. We train future professionals who tomorrow will work "with us", in the health and social sector. "Social or nursing training institutes send forward the planning of their internship needs to the Village and it is on this basis that the possibility of welcoming them is studied. The Village’s first intern was Alexia Cassou, a first year student at IFSI in Dax for a period of 5 weeks.

Have the time to take the time

After a long-stay internship and another in a living facility with a secured Alzheimer's unit, coming to the Village was a bit special for her: “I had heard a lot about the Village and I wondered what was behind its public image. I was happy to have the opportunity to learn about its concept but I was also a little anxious to be so close to this disease that I knew little about. Alexia spent two full weeks in 4 of the Village households before joining the nursing team in their daily life in this neighborhood. "I did not expect that. For example, that residents stay here until the end of their life therefore there is palliative care on site. I learned a lot and, unlike my previous stages which were quite stressful because you always had to hurry, I had the time here to take the time. In the end, it went really well."

Gabriel Lassartesse, state-certified nurse and Alexia's tutor, accompanied her on her journey and was able to follow her progress. “Of course, we showed her the medical procedures related to nursing care, but the opportunity here was also to make her discover another way of working compared to a traditional establishment and how to be in the accompaniment of Villagers as much as in care."

The internship, a give-and-take experience

Véronique Gizard underlines the give-and-take aspect of these internships: “The aim is for the student to learn practices and develop their knowledge but it must be kept in mind that the internship must also be of interest to the establishment. Indeed, by confronting the questions of the students, the professionals themselves learn and evolve. The school hopes to welcome between 25 and 30 students per year.
