The foundations of the experiment are settled

The research

On Tuesday september 17th, a few days before Alzheimer’s World Day, the Village’s team went to Paris to report on the progress of this unique project in France six months before its opening.

In the presence of the partners of the operation*, several of the main components of the village could be approached.

Regarding the site works, Francis Lacoste, former Director of Solidarity at the Landes Department Council and initiator of the project alongside Henri Emmanuelli, was able to reassure the audience: "the work is proceeding according to schedule, it should be received before the end of 2019," he said.

Florence Laudouar, coordinator of animation and volunteering within the Village was also able to express her satisfaction. Indeed, with more than 80 volunteers having already made the awareness day of their future role proposed by the psychologist and France Alzheimer Education League, she can show her confidence to reach the expected figure of 120 on this essential part of the Village’s life because, as she says, "It must become a full-fledged district of Dax"

In parallel with these important issues, the ethical and scientific committees continue to draw hand in hand the contours of the experiment which will be carried out during 5 years. Their goal is to "propose a program assessing the impact of the Village by taking into account the many data collected from residents, relatives, carers, volunteers, and even the population of Dax", explains the Professor Bordeaux University Jean-François Dartigues, President of the Scientific Committee. The study of the Village's social perception has already begun (see the methodological box below). For those who are already aware of the project, the Village already carries very positive results on the perception of Alzheimer's disease.

"It's an important experience that needs to be successful. Because if the results show that the project is a success, it can serve as an example and the practices that are developed within it can be reproduced in other places of care for people suffering from dementia. "
Dr. Bernard Bioulac, professor emeritus at the University of Bordeaux,
Member of the National Academy of Medicine and Chair of the Village Ethics Committee

By analyzing, for example, the evolution of residents' quality of life, the quality of family ties with loved ones, the feeling of competence for professionals or the feeling of purpose for volunteers, it will be possible to scientifically prove the impact of the Village. And that's why its opening next spring will only be the beginning of this great adventure.
